If you're committed to keeping a rhyming poem in rhyme, are your rhyming words fresh and intelligent? Have you eliminated all "padding" rhymes? Would slant, internal, or eye rhyme give you more flexibility to say what you really want to say? Do you hear the "music" in your poetry? Checklist: Images, symbols, and figurative language Do your poems have plenty of concrete, specific, and detailed images? Or are you relying on cliches and bland generalizations? Will the symbols in your poetry have resonance for both you AND your readers? Are you making effective use of metaphors and similes? Is the Irony in your poem intentional or unintentional?
